Industry recommendations for action to accelerate energy efficiency in maritime

Energy efficiency is the most immediate and cost-effective way to reduce emissions in the maritime sector while paving the way for alternative fuels. However, unlocking its full potential requires regulatory alignment, robust incentives, and industry-wide commitment. Data, technology, and smart economic incentives are essential for bringing clarity to the sector, establishing trusted baselines, and ensuring that both regulation and market dynamics drive meaningful progress.
Following the industry roundtable From policy to reality – Accelerating the energy transition in maritime hosted by ZeroNorth with participation from industry associations and stakeholders across the maritime supply chain — including shipping companies, biofuel manufacturers, scrubber and equipment providers, ship designers, and technology providers — this roundtable brought together diverse expertise to drive meaningful action on energy efficiency. We are pleased to share the final recommendations developed from these discussions.
These recommendations outline key actions for both policymakers and industry to accelerate the adoption of energy efficiency. They highlight the need to embed operational efficiency as a core pillar of emissions reduction strategies, establish robust incentives, leverage high-quality data for enforcement and remove barriers to global scaling.
