ZeroNorth Joins Getting to Zero Coalition
We are delighted to announce ZeroNorth has become a member of the Global Maritime Forum’s Getting to Zero Coalition initiative.
What is Getting to Zero?
The Getting to Zero Coalition is a partnership between the Global Maritime Forum, the Friends of Ocean action, and the World Economic Forum. Aimed to accelerate international public-private collaboration to scale and deploy new green maritime solutions, putting international shipping on an ambitious zero-emission course. It builds on the Call to Action in Support of Decarbonisation launched in October 2018 and signed by more than 70 leaders from across the maritime industry, financial institutions and other stakeholders along with the Poseidon Principles – a global framework for climate-aligned ship financing – launched on in June of 2019.
The Challenge
International shipping emits 2-3 percent of global GHG emissions, transporting close to 80 percent of global trade by volume. To curb the emissions from shipping, the IMO has agreed on an ambition to reduce GHG emissions from shipping by at least 50 percent by 2050. The challenges of decarbonisation will require clean technologies, alternative fuels and, as another crucial element, more intelligent use of data and technology. There is a need to have technically feasible, commercially viable, and safe zero emission deep sea vessels entering the global fleet by 2030, as well as a clear path to provide the large amounts of zero carbon energy sources needed to allow the rapid uptake of ZEVs in the following decades.
The reasons for this push are clear; shipping needs digitalisation and data-driven insight and intelligence to fuel progressive decision-making that underpins good business performance and the pursuit of sustainability goals. In short, shipping has started to embrace the power of its considerable data resource as a driver of genuine business change — if harnessed properly. This is because data and technology can help unlock and underpin more intelligent decision-making; an immediately achievable first step towards realising greater sustainability outcomes as achieving the 2050 target requires immediate action. To get a head start on reducing environmental impact ZeroNorth works together everyday with customers and partners to develop cutting edge technology into a software-platform that will help the shipping industry optimise operations, maximize business and reduce CO2 emissions.
Across the industry, we can see this trend clearly; through the growing and thriving ecosystem of organisations that are now collaborating, inventing and implementing the technologies of the future. Coalition member companies from across the maritime, fuels and infrastructure value chains are committed to making the vision of decarbonised shipping a reality by getting commercially viable ZEVs into operation by 2030 along with the associated scalable infrastructure.
We believe that fearless technological innovation, and constructive international collaboration is the first step on the path to build a net-zero carbon economy.
Action starts today
ZeroNorth is committed to digitalising shipping for the climate. What does that mean? It means that we believe that through data and software, we can immediately impact emissions in shipping.
By first utilising real time data of vessel particulars, weather and market, we can provide the optimal way for a vessel to sail from point A to B or even C. Our algorithm does 1000's of computational analysis based on 100's of data points to deliver a proven result. By offering technology enhanced decision making, we help operators know the best recommendation for each vessel to utilise its full capacity which sailing and bunkering.
The ZeroNorth platform delivers a transparent voyage plan showing actions to take which positively impacts emission reduction. We believe through software, such as ours and others in the voyage optimisation space, shipping can today take immediate action to reduce Co2 emissions.
Our commitment as a member of the Getting to Zero Coalition, as a knowledge partner, is to provide insight into how data, software and technology can benefit the industry by helping it achieve its emissions goals in the short and long term.
